[ as you step forward the ground underneath your feet changes to rough wood, the dim light flaring almost eyesearingly bright before fading again into the rippling reflection of sunlight off of the water.

you stand on a dock, in the middle of a beach. before you, a river (the river...?) stretches as far as you can see to your left and right, but not quite wide enough that you can't faintly make out the opposite shore. the sun is just barely visible over the greenery over there— you can't quite tell whether it's just rising or almost done setting, but the lightshow it makes off of the clouds and water is incredible either way. the smell of the water is cool and rich, thick with the smell of things living and dying in the way only larger bodies of water are.

all in all, it's very peaceful. ]

[very peaceful, indeed. there's the temptation to stay exactly where he is, just just admire the view and bask in the tranquility of the scene. eventually though he moves toward the end of the dock, trying to decide where he should go from here, whether he should go anywhere at all]

[ there's nothing that really stands out as a hint...

visually, anyway. the first step he takes is interrupted by a shift in the sand and gravel somewhere below his feet, under the dock, followed by the wonderful sound of someone choking up an alarming amount of water. ]

[well, that's alarming. there's a moment of panicked hesitation and then he's dropping to his knees, peering over the side of the dock to try and get a look at whatever's under there. Just as well he has sharp eyesight, right?]

H-hello?

[miraculess]

[ there is a sodden lump of a person under there in the shallows, coughing and wheezing for air ]

[ofobedience]

[another sliver of hesitation, but then he's pushing it back and dropping down into the shallow water, wading over to the sodden lump to better investigate]

are you...?

[reaching out his hand to touch a sodden shoulder with just the tips of his fingers]

[miraculess]

[ she doesn't respond to the touch at all ]

...'m fine.

[ofobedience]

[well that's...]

Lilith??

[miraculess]

[ turns her head just enough to glance at him, thoroughly dead-eyed ]

[ofobedience]

[annnnd it's a look that cuts into him down to the bone]

Are you...?

[all right, he means. but it seems a redundant question]

[miraculess]

I'm fine.

[ a little more coherent this time, but it's the same dull tone of voice.

really, underneath the exhaustion, she sounds... disappointed. ]

[ofobedience]

[he frowns, crouches down to be closer to her despite the dead eyes and dull voice]

But something's wrong...and...you're in the water.

[miraculess]

[ vague noise of agreement, or at least acknowledgement ]

...it didn't work.

[ofobedience]

What didn't work?

[asked quietly, with some trepidation]

[miraculess]

Drowning...

[ofobedience]

[Lilith :(]

I'm glad it didn't, then. I don't want you to drown.

[miraculess]

You want me to keep suffering...?

[ofobedience]

No. That's not what I meant...

[miraculess]

There isn't anything else.

[ofobedience]

But there could be.

[miraculess]

I'll just destroy it again... there's no point.

[ofobedience]

Maybe it's worth it, despite what might happen in the end. I don't know. Having something even for a little while seems better than this.

[he's not the best person to ask, probably. he sighs]

Perhaps we should get out of the water...

[miraculess]

[ mumbled ]

No... no more. I'm tired...

[ofobedience]

[he knows what she meant by that, but--]

I can carry you. You won't have to do anything.

[miraculess]

[ ...no response. ]
