[ he gives up on that for now and instead crouches to try to pick up the sleeping woman ]

She lifts easily, lying limply in his arms.

[ well, then, he's going to carry her out of the room ]

He exits the room into a hallway, with several closed doors along it. Again, he's just in time to catch sight of the person rushing through the opposite door.

[ still carrying the woman, he quickens his pace slightly to follow the mystery person, calling after them ]

Wait.

There's no response from ahead— but he gets about halfway down the hall before the quality of the silence changes, making the hair on the back of his neck stand up. It's hard to say exactly how he knows, but—

Something is behind him. He can hear it breathing.

Jeez. Are you going to attack me while I'm carrying someone? How unfair.

[ and he turns around ]

It's standing so close he nearly bumps into it on the turn.

It's almost painful to look at, the form shifting and distorting as he watches; it's like trying to focus on something in a pitch-black room, or perhaps something viewed through heat haze. He can make out sharp blades, though, and glittering grey eyes before it reaches out and tears the corpse from his arms.
